Mosaic Mural at New Highland
This arts-focused bi-lingual elementary school wanted to give students ownership in the way their buildings looked. I worked with first- and fourth-grade students over a three week period, teaching partly in spanish. We first discussed what exactly a mosaic is, by looking at how pieces of color - in Van Gogh, Quilts, tiled mosques, and digital photographs - work together to make an image. Then in small groups the kids made animals, plants and imaginary cloud beings out of broken ceramic tiles. A crew of some of the children helped incorporate their creations into a larger mural about the environment.
